Throwing off the Hump, Cracks & Glaze Testing

I threw a bunch of little baby Hawaiian clay bowls for glaze testing. I threw them off the hump. I’ve never had much luck with pots thrown off the hump. I thought the groggy Hawaiian Red clay would be OK, but Nooo! About 50% of my off the hump baby bowls got S cracks. Same old off the hump story.
My glaze test results were less than exciting. Only a couple that I would consider using. I’m also experiencing something new with the Hawaiian Red Clay... Just like my mutt clay, the Hawaiian clay is getting the raised grog in the glaze firing. Maybe it’s my firing schedule. I guess it’s more trial and error for me.

  1. My red clay does the same thing if I work it too much or two long or I smooth it with a sponge too much, so I try to minimize that, wonder if throwing off the hump the clay was worked too long and it brought the grog to the surface?

  2. Hi Linda, I had the surface metal ribbed and smooth as a baby's bottom. That darn grog is lifting like crazy during glaze firing. I also noticed the color is darker. Something is off.

  3. I was taught a) to compress pot bottoms to avoid the s crack--hard to do on the hump and b) that throwing off the hump really relates to using a kick wheel, and never really stopping it much as you throw a bunch or items, plus only wedging a big ball once----not my style, I don't mind small lumps of clay---but anyway, your bowls are little cuties :)

  4. Well Cindy,
I know nothing of throwing off the hump. I've seen it done, but never have done it myself. As for your glaze tests, I love the blue in the center foreground & the one just to the left which looks to be the same as the larger one in the back right. You lucky glaze tester, you! I love that photo of all your bowls piled up! Thanks for stopping by my blog & for your kind & encouraging comments! :) I am signed up for a wheel throwing class in the fall- I simply cannot wait! Hoping I can still center... not that I ever had the chance to get that great at it before, so maybe this time around! :)
By the way, how is your back? Much better I hope!!!
    :)

  5. Gary, I'm totally into compressing my bottoms, so throwing off the hump felt like something important was missing. In deed!

Hi Becky, Thanks, I like the glaze results a little better today. Sometimes it takes a while for those odd colors to grow on ya. I'm sure you're going to pick up right where you left off with wheel thowing. You're going to have so much fun in that class. PT is teaching me a lot of core strengthening exercises. Keeping positive :)
