I have always boo-hoo'ed the phrase "find your artistic voice". But as time goes by I find myself longing for a style that I can find a home in. I'm starting with forms that appeal to me and over time, let imagination and inspiration take hold. I will slowly explore the limits of select forms. Hopefully they will morph into something very cool.
So this mug shape is great. I've been playing around with it for a couple months now. It's fun to throw, it's very sturdy and I like it. The next time I make this mug, I will change the handle and maybe make deeper throw-lines in the base. I plan to include this cup form in my journey of exploration.

I like that mug, is the glaze gray? It's a color not often found which seems a warmer neutral than white or black. I'm right there with you, exploring for my artistic voice, I also find I keep returning to similar work I've done in the past, I used large applied sprigs when I first started working with Cone 10 and now I'm back using them again, this time embellishing the backgrounds, so I think my style is evolving even if it is slowly.
ReplyDeleteRecently June Perry blogged a post and video about a traditional slipware potter in England who changed his style after 20 years making traditional slipware pottery, that fact was so interesting to me, and I was inspired by his non traditional use of color now.
Great post Cindy, food for much thought, and of course, more exploration.
I like that color too and it is a nice shape. Re: your last post, I know a potter around here that had a bunch of large bowls made from recycled oldish clay and then filled waste glaze in them and fired them, then used them as garden ornaments.I wasn't there so I don't know the logistics, just know the girl that made the bowls for her.
ReplyDeleteI just had to come and ask- your daughter just moved to Norfolk!? That is where I am from and have family there as well.
ReplyDeleteYes, She and 2 kids just got there last week. Her husband has been there for a year (Career Navy). They couldn't bare not being together for another 2 years, so they put their Washington house up for sale and moved across the country. She's a tough military wife. She has done a lot of moving in the past 11 years. Always an adventure.
ReplyDeleteThere's something almost soothing about the shape, and the color really accentuates that aspect of it.
ReplyDeleteI've just come from your etsy shop, and have to say that you've converted me! I've never really been an amber kind of gal, but your deep amber glaze has got me in an uproar - SUCH a beautiful color. Oh, and the things you're doing with your slip-trailing is fabulous. Great work, as always!
I like the shape of your mug too! If you like unusual shapes, try a triangle mug that is already attached to its saucer!
ReplyDeleteNice shape on that mug. Nice handle. About finding your own voice...I've found for a long time that it sure is an adventure. A slow adventure!
